ICF Mentor Coaching: Requirements, Cost, What Happens & How to Choose a Mentor
ICF mentor coaching is 10 hours of feedback on your coaching, measured against the ICF Core Competencies, from a credentialed mentor coach — over at least three months, with at least three hours one-on-one. It is required for ACC, PCC and MCC applications and for ACC renewal. From 1 January 2027, new hours must come from a mentor holding the Mentor Coach Specialization (MCS).
Mentor coaching is the part of ICF credentialing that most directly changes how you coach: an experienced, credentialed coach listens to your real sessions and shows you, marker by marker, where you meet the ICF standard and where you do not. This guide covers the rules, the cost, what actually happens in the hours, and how to make them count.
| ICF mentor coaching at a glance (2026) | |
|---|---|
| Total hours | 10 hours of mentor coaching |
| Individual | At least 3 of the 10 hours one-on-one |
| Group | Up to 7 hours in a group (small groups; ICF caps group size) |
| Duration | Spread over a minimum of 3 months |
| Who can mentor | A coach holding your target credential or higher (ACC mentors must have renewed their ACC at least once); PCC applicants need a PCC or MCC; MCC applicants need an MCC |
| Evidence | Mentor's name, credential, dates and hours are listed on your application |
What mentor coaching is — and is not
ICF defines mentor coaching as coaching on your coaching: a credentialed coach gives you feedback on your demonstrated ability against the ICF Core Competencies. It is skills development with a specific standard in mind — the markers assessors use when they score your recorded session and the judgment the Credentialing Exam tests.
| Practice | Focus | Required by ICF? |
|---|---|---|
| Mentor coaching | Your competencies, measured against the ICF markers, from recordings | Yes — 10 hours per application, and for ACC renewal |
| Coaching supervision | Reflection on your practice, clients, ethics and wellbeing | Recommended, not required |
| Being coached | Your own goals, led by you | No (but common in training programs) |
| Coach training | Education hours: theory, models, practice with feedback | Yes — 60 / 125 / 200 hours by level |
The distinction matters on your application: hours of supervision or of being coached do not count as mentor coaching, and a mentor who never hears you coach cannot give the marker-level feedback ICF intends.
Requirements by credential level
The 10-hour structure is the same for every credential; what changes is who may mentor you and how the hours combine with the other requirements.
| Credential | Mentor coaching | Mentor must hold | Alongside |
|---|---|---|---|
| ACC | 10 h (≥3 h individual, ≥3 months) | ACC (renewed once), PCC or MCC | 60+ training hours, 100+ coaching hours, exam |
| PCC | 10 h (≥3 h individual, ≥3 months) | PCC or MCC | 125+ training hours, 500+ coaching hours, exam + recording |
| MCC | 10 h (≥3 h individual, ≥3 months) | MCC | 200+ training hours, 2,500+ coaching hours, PCC first, exam + recording |
| ACC renewal | 10 additional hours | As for ACC | Continuing coach education |
ICF-accredited Level 1 and Level 2 programs normally include the mentor coaching; check that the mentor's credential matches your target before you count on it. Full level requirements: ICF certification guide.
What happens in mentor coaching sessions
- 1
Record a real session
With the client's written permission, record a 20–45 minute session. Choose a real client, not a role-play; mentors and ICF assessors want to hear you with genuine stakes.
- 2
Self-assess first
Before the mentor listens, mark the moments you advised, led or interpreted, and the questions that opened something for the client. Come with two or three specific timestamps.
- 3
Mentor listens and marks
The mentor maps the recording to the competency markers: which were present, which were missing, and at what level (ACC/PCC/MCC) the demonstration sits.
- 4
Discuss the moments
You replay key moments together and rehearse alternatives: what would a PCC-level response have been here? This is where most learning happens.
- 5
Set a practice focus
One competency to work on until the next session, with a concrete behaviour (e.g. acknowledge before asking; reflect emotion, not just content).
- 6
Repeat with new recordings
Over the three months you bring fresh recordings so the mentor can hear the change. Most coaches see the biggest shift between sessions two and four.
How much ICF mentor coaching costs
| Option | Typical range (USD) | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Individual hours (3–10 h) | $150–$400 per hour | MCC mentors and executive niches at the top of the range |
| Group program (7 h) | $500–$1,500 | Small groups; you also learn from others' recordings |
| Full 10 h package | $1,000–$3,000 | Often bundled into accredited training tuition |
The cheapest way to lower the cost is to arrive prepared: mentors charge by the hour, and an hour spent discovering your basic patterns is an hour not spent refining them. Self-review and scored practice sessions before the engagement typically save two to three paid hours.
How to choose a mentor coach
Credential level and recency
Match your target credential. If you are going for PCC, a PCC or MCC mentor who has coached recently is worth more than an MCC who mostly teaches.
They work from recordings
Good mentors insist on hearing you coach. If a mentor only wants to talk about coaching, it is not mentor coaching.
Marker-level feedback
Ask how they give feedback. You want timestamps and specific markers, not general impressions.
Fit with your style
Directive, somatic, solution-focused — a mentor who recognises different valid approaches will help you meet the markers without losing your voice.
Group plus individual
A program that combines a small group (hearing others' recordings is instructive) with your three individual hours is usually the best value.
Where to look: your training program's mentor list, the ICF credentialed-coach directory (filter by credential and "mentor coaching"), and ICF chapter communities.
How to prepare so the hours count
- •Have recordings ready before the first session — two or three real sessions, with consent, of different clients.
- •Know your own patterns. Review each recording against the markers and list your top three habits (advising, leading questions, skipping acknowledgment).
- •Get scored between sessions. AI practice sessions give you a competency report with quotes from your own conversation, so you bring the mentor specific moments rather than impressions.
- •Ask for level-specific feedback. "Where was this ACC-level, and what would PCC-level have looked like?"
- •AI is preparation, not a substitute. Scored practice and self-review make mentor hours count; the 10 hours themselves must be delivered by a human mentor — from 2027 an MCS holder.
- •Log the hours as you go — dates, format (individual/group), mentor's credential — exactly as the application asks.

ICF mentor coaching FAQ
What is ICF mentor coaching?+
Mentor coaching is feedback on your actual coaching from an ICF-credentialed coach, focused specifically on the ICF Core Competencies. The mentor listens to your recorded sessions (or observes live), tells you which competency markers were present or missing, and helps you practise the difference. It is required for every ICF credential application and for ACC renewal.
How many hours of mentor coaching does ICF require?+
Ten hours over at least three months, of which at least three hours must be individual (one-on-one). The remaining hours may be in a group. The same 10 hours apply to ACC, PCC and MCC applications.
How much does ICF mentor coaching cost?+
Individual mentor coaching commonly costs $150–$400 per hour depending on the mentor's credential and market; group programs for the 7 group hours often cost $500–$1,500. Budget roughly $1,000–$3,000 for the full 10 hours. Many ICF-accredited training programs include the mentor coaching in tuition.
What is the difference between mentor coaching, supervision and coaching?+
Mentor coaching develops your competencies against the ICF markers (skills-focused, required for credentials). Supervision is a reflective space about your practice, clients and ethics (strongly recommended, not required). Coaching is client-led work on the client's goals. A mentor coach evaluates your coaching; a supervisor helps you think about it; a coach helps you with your own agenda.
Who can be my ICF mentor coach?+
A coach who holds an ICF credential at your target level or higher and is in good standing. For ACC applicants the mentor may be an ACC who has completed at least one renewal, a PCC or an MCC. PCC applicants need a PCC or MCC; MCC applicants need an MCC. From 1 January 2027, new mentor coaching hours count only if the mentor also holds the ICF Mentor Coach Specialization (MCS) at the matching level; hours completed before then still count.
What are the ICF mentor coaching requirements?+
10 hours of mentor coaching over at least three months, at least three of them one-on-one and the rest optionally in a small group, from a mentor holding your target credential or higher. ICF Level 1 and Level 2 programs normally include these hours; on the Portfolio path you arrange them yourself and list the mentor, dates and hours on your application.
Is ICF mentor coaching the same as mentoring?+
No. General mentoring usually means an experienced person sharing advice and experience. ICF mentor coaching is narrower: a credentialed coach gives you feedback on your own coaching, from recordings or observed sessions, against the ICF Core Competencies, to prepare you for a credential.
Can AI practice replace ICF mentor coaching?+
No. The 10 hours must be delivered by a qualified human mentor. AI practice sessions are preparation, never a substitute: they help you find your patterns and bring specific moments to your mentor, so the paid hours go further.
Does mentor coaching count for ACC renewal?+
Yes. ACC holders must complete 10 additional hours of mentor coaching for their first renewal, alongside continuing coach education. PCC and MCC renewals do not require mentor coaching.
