2027 changes: from 1 January 2027 new mentor coaching hours count only from mentors holding the Mentor Coach Specialization (MCS); from 1 April 2027 the PCC Portfolio recording is replaced by observed mentor coaching. MCC keeps its performance evaluation. Fees can change, so check ICF PCC and ICF MCC before applying.
What does it mean to be ICF certified?
ICF certification (formally an ICF credential) means the International Coaching Federation has independently verified four things: that you completed coach-specific education, that you have logged a minimum number of hours coaching real clients, that you were mentored by a credentialed coach, and that you can demonstrate the 8 ICF Core Competencies in practice — assessed through the ICF Credentialing Exam and, for some paths, a recorded coaching session.
It matters because coaching is an unregulated profession: anyone can call themselves a coach. A credential is how clients, HR departments and coaching platforms tell trained coaches from untrained ones. Many corporate and executive coaching contracts require at least a PCC.
Credentials are renewed every three years with continuing coach education, so certification is a standard you maintain, not a one-time badge.

Is the ICF exam hard?
The ICF Credentialing Exam is scenario-based. Each item describes a realistic coaching situation and asks you to pick the best and the worst of four possible coach responses. It tests judgment against the ICF Core Competencies and Code of Ethics, not memorised definitions.
What makes it hard for some candidates:

Most coaches start with ACC. If you already have significant experience, check whether you can document enough hours to apply directly for PCC.

ICF certification vs other coaching certifications
ICF is the largest and most widely recognised coaching body globally. EMCC (Europe) and the Association for Coaching are respected alternatives, especially in the UK and EU, and some employers accept either. Certificates issued by individual training schools without third-party accreditation carry far less weight with corporate buyers.
