ICF Mentor Coaching Changes in 2027: What ACC and PCC Candidates Need to Know
ICF is changing two things every credential candidate depends on. From 1 January 2027, new mentor coaching hours count only if your mentor holds the new Mentor Coach Specialization (MCS). From 1 April 2027, ACC and PCC Portfolio applicants no longer submit a performance-evaluation recording; their MCS mentor observes their sessions and documents competence instead. Here is exactly what changes, what still counts, and what to do in the months before the deadline — with ICF's own announcements as sources.

The Mentor Coach Specialization (MCS)
Until now any ICF-credentialed coach at your target level or above could be your mentor. The MCS adds a training and assessment standard on top of the credential. To earn it on the Standard Path a mentor needs an active PCC, MCC or renewed ACC; at least 41 hoursof education aligned with ICF's Mentor Coaching Competencies, at least half of it live; and training on the assessment instrument for each level they want to mentor — the ACC BARS, the PCC Markers or the MCC BARS. Experienced mentors can use a Credit for Prior Learning path (10 hours of education, evidence of five mentees who earned credentials in three years). The designation comes in three levels — MCS-ACC, MCS-PCC, MCS-MCC — and is renewed every three years.
ICF opened MCS applications in 2026 with introductory fees through March 2027 ($50 members / $125 non-members). Whether enough mentors qualify before January is the open question for candidates — see what it means for you.
Enhanced mentor coaching replaces the recording (ACC/PCC Portfolio)
Today a Portfolio applicant submits a recorded session that ICF assessors score against the ACC BARS or PCC Markers. From 1 April 2027 that single summative assessment is replaced by a formative one inside mentor coaching:
- •the MCS mentor observes at least three of your coaching sessions over an engagement of at least three months;
- •after each observed session the mentor completes a Session Observation Form and gives you developmental feedback;
- •at the end the mentor submits a Competency Review Form with your application; you keep the observation forms in case of audit.
ICF's stated reasons: assessing recordings — often through translated transcripts — can miss the depth of a coaching interaction and create barriers for candidates worldwide, and candidates reported the application as complex (54%) and time-consuming (38%). Competence is now captured "through practice, reflection, feedback, and growth over time". MCC applicants keep the performance evaluation.
What it means for you
Fewer eligible mentors, at least at first
Every mentor must add 41 hours of training (or qualify via prior learning) before January. Expect a smaller pool in early 2027, especially for MCS-PCC and MCS-MCC, and book early.
Mentor hours will cost more
Training costs and a scarcer supply push rates up. If 10 hours cost $1,000–$3,000 today, budget above that for 2027 engagements — and make every hour count.
Your mentor becomes your assessor
For Portfolio applicants the person giving feedback also documents your competence. Arriving with sessions already reviewed against the markers means their observations show refinement, not first exposure.
A window before the deadline
Hours completed under current rules count forever. If you are close to your 10 hours, or renewing, finishing with your current mentor in 2026 is the simplest path.

If you have mentor coaching in progress, complete it in 2026 with your current mentor; log dates, format and the mentor's credential exactly as the application asks.

Ask your mentor about MCS
If you plan to start or continue in 2027, ask whether they are applying for MCS at your level. If not, start looking now — ICF's directory will list MCS holders.

Know the markers your mentor will use
From 2027 your mentor scores you on the ACC BARS or PCC Markers. Review your own recordings against them first, so paid hours go to refinement.

Practise between mentor sessions
Observed sessions are spread over three months. Use the gaps: peer coaching, self-review, and AI-evaluated practice sessions that score the same competencies.

From 2027 renewal supervision hours must come from a supervisor with the Coaching Supervisor Specialization (CSS) or an equivalent credential.

What is the ICF Mentor Coach Specialization (MCS)?+
A new ICF designation for coaches who provide mentor coaching. The Standard Path requires an active PCC, MCC or renewed ACC, at least 41 hours of mentor-coaching education (at least half synchronous), and assessment training on the ACC BARS, PCC Markers or MCC BARS for each level. A Credit for Prior Learning path (10 hours of education plus evidence of five credential-earning mentees in three years) exists for experienced mentors. Introductory fees run through March 2027: $50 for ICF members, $125 for non-members.
Do my existing mentor coaching hours still count after 2027?+
Yes. ICF states that mentor coaching completed under the current requirements can be used toward new ACC, PCC and MCC applications and toward renewals, even after 1 January 2027. Only hours started from 1 January 2027 must be delivered by an MCS holder.
Is the performance evaluation really going away?+
For ACC and PCC applicants on the Portfolio path, yes — from 1 April 2027 it is replaced by enhanced mentor coaching: the MCS mentor observes at least three of your sessions over the engagement and documents your competence. MCC applicants still submit a performance evaluation. Level 1 and Level 2 program graduates were never assessed by ICF directly; their programs handle it.
Does the ICF Credentialing Exam change?+
ICF's announcements about the 2027 changes do not mention the exam; as of now the scenario-based Credentialing Exam remains part of ACC, PCC and MCC applications.
Which MCS level does my mentor need?+
The level you are applying for or renewing. For ACC you may work with an MCS-ACC or MCS-PCC mentor; PCC candidates need MCS-PCC; MCC candidates need MCS-MCC.

Formative feedback over several observed sessions replaces a single summative recording.
Can an AI tool replace ICF mentor coaching?+
No. The 10 hours must be delivered by a human mentor coach — from 2027 an MCS holder — and only their observations count toward your credential. AI evaluation is preparation: it helps you review your own sessions against the competency markers before you spend paid mentor hours, so those hours go to refinement rather than discovery.
