ICF Core Competency: Cultivates Trust and Safety
Trust is the oxygen of coaching. Without it, clients won't go deep enough to create real change. This competency is about creating a safe, supportive environment where clients can be fully honest.
What Is Trust & Safety?
Cultivates Trust and Safety means partnering with the client to create a safe, supportive environment that allows the client to share freely. It involves maintaining a relationship of mutual respect and trust, and demonstrating genuine care for the client's wellbeing and future.
Why It Matters for ICF Certification
Clients will only share what's really going on — their fears, doubts, and dreams — when they feel psychologically safe. ICF assessors look for warmth, empathy, respect, and genuine care in the coach's approach.
