Life Coaching Questions: 24 Questions for Purpose, Change and Getting Unstuck
Life coaching clients rarely arrive with a tidy goal. They arrive with a feeling — restless, stuck, behind. These questions help turn that feeling into something the client can see and work with, while keeping the conversation in coaching: forward-looking, resourceful, action-oriented.

- “What do you want more of — and less of?”
- “When did you last feel fully alive? What was happening?”
- “What are you tolerating right now?”
- “What would you do if nobody would judge you?”
- “What does 'enough' look like for you?”
What's in the way?
Explore obstacles as information, not verdicts.
- “What stops you?”
- “What story do you tell yourself about why this hasn't happened?”
- “Whose expectations are you carrying?”
- “What are you afraid would happen if you succeeded?”
- “What have you tried, and what did you learn?”

Values and meaning
Anchor choices in what matters.
- “What do you want your life to be about?”

- “When you feel most like yourself, what are you doing?”
- “What would you regret not trying?”
- “What do you value that your current life doesn't reflect?”

Commitment
Small, owned, dated.
- “What's one thing you could do this week that would feel like a step?”
- “What would make it easy?”
- “Who could you tell?”
- “How will you celebrate doing it?”
- “What will you do when the old pattern shows up?”

How to use these questions
- •Stay with the client's language. If they say 'stuck', ask what stuck feels like before you rename it.
- •Life coaching borders therapy. If the conversation turns to trauma, persistent depression or risk, name it and refer — that is ethical practice, not failure.
- •Values questions land best after the client has described a specific moment, not in the abstract.

What brought you to coaching now? What do you want to be different? What have you already tried? What would make this useful? How will we know it's working? Keep the first session about the client's picture, not a plan.
What is the difference between life coaching and therapy?+
Therapy treats and heals, often looking at the past and at clinical conditions. Coaching partners with a functioning client to create a future they want. Coaches refer out when a client needs therapy.

Fewer than you think. A 45-minute session with eight to twelve well-placed questions and real silence usually goes deeper than one with thirty.
