Less Effective

'Okay, so what are some things you could do about it?'

Why? Validation builds trust. People need to feel heard before they can think clearly.

Tips for This Exercise

  • 1Acknowledge before exploring: 'That's a lot to carry'
  • 2Normalize their experience: 'Many people in your situation would feel the same'
  • 3Don't minimize: avoid 'at least...' or 'it could be worse'
  • 4Match their energy level — if they're upset, be warm not analytical
